Hi everyone,

As you’ve probably heard from your favorite conservation group, today is the last day to comment on the Forest Service’s proposal to change the Travel Management Rule so that areas would be open to motorized use by default.

You may remember that Mary Kaye, myself, and others commented on the Rio Grande National Forest’s winter travel management plan. Now that whole process is in jeopardy by this proposal. If they change the travel management rule, you can say goodbye to quiet skiing in the national forest because all roads will be open to motorized use unless specifically designated as closed.

Also, the USDA is moving to rescind the Roadless Area Rule that protects non-wilderness areas from further road building.

The official comment site is https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2026/08/24/2026-17211/travel-management-national-forest-system-lands . Or for a quick, easy way, you can sign on to an organization’s comment letter.

I hope you’re able to enjoy National Public Lands Day by attending the Sandia event that Amy posted, by participating in a volunteer event, or just by getting outside!
Another great way to support our public lands is by advocating… if you’re moved to speak up, please do. Let me know if you’d like me to share my comments on Regulations.gov with you.

Thanks,
Dana
