Obituary:

Dorothy “Dorcey” Yaskell Winant, “A Great Person with a Great Heart who knew no strangers”.
Easton resident Dorcey Yaskell Winant passed away surrounded by family, friends, and loving husband on September 22, 2019 in Morristown Women’s Cancer Center.
Dorcey was born in Peabody, MA, on May 19, 1944 to the late John and Doris Yaskell. She lived her life loving people and being a best friend to all. Dorcey was “one of a kind”.
Dorcey graduated from Peabody High School in 1961 and married Dr. Richard Winant in 1968. She holds a B.A. in Communications and Theater from Tennessee State University. Dorcey received a reverse integration scholarship at Tennessee State University where she graduated summa cum laude. She received the National Association of Dramatic and Speech Arts’ Student Directors Award. Dorcey also arranged an audition, which included whites for the first fully integrated theater production at TSU.
Career endeavors include: Executive Secretary on a United States Navy Admiral’s Staff; Director of Patient Education for a statewide program in a medical school; Administrative Assistant to a Library Director at a mid-size college; Artistic Director of a summer theater; and an actress/director/producer for stage/television/radio/film and video. Her managerial skills and talent have been recognized by a Merit Pay Increase Award at the Boston Naval Shipyard (the first recipient of the award – she was eighteen years old); President of a statewide theater organization; a participant of numerous national, state, and community boards; and a long list of positive reviews and awards for her activism, performances, and productions.
Richard, her husband, took a position at The University of North Dakota’s School of Medicine in Grand Forks North Dakota. Dorcey acted and directed in numerous productions on local and state stages. She was one of a small group of people who created the first SummerThing in 1977 where more than 30,000 people attended over three weekends. The planning group grew in the following successful years, which produced more diverse programming. Dorcey was a leader in this process. She served as the Medical Schools Patient Education Coordinator and developed an internationally recognized program. A small group of Grand Forks theater people saved a Firehouse from being demolished by working with city government. That same group then created the Firehall Theater, which has provided the community with entertainment for almost 40 years! Dorcey was so proud of this achievement.
Richard then took a position at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. While in Richmond, Dorcey directed and acted on many stages and was in numerous commercials. She was chair of fund-raising efforts of a number of non-profits. Dorcey was a leader for the Ukrainian Honored Group at the annual boys’ club fundraiser. In addition, she chaired the Fan Districts house tour fundraiser on Monument Avenue, including coordinating the celebration for the successful house tour in the White House of The Confederacy. Dorcey was a board member of SPARC and planned multiple fundraisers for that group.
Dorcey’s civic activism in New Jersey began in the 1990s. In every state she has resided, she has been civically active, but continued her acting and directing while in the Big Apple area. Since living in New Jersey, Dorcey became Chair of the Jersey City Light Rail Task Force; was elected a Democratic Committeewoman; was named to the Liberty State Park’s Advisory Committee and made a Trustee of Friends of Liberty State Park; was a board member of the George Washington Commemorative Society of Jersey City; a board member of the Lincoln Association; served as a board member on her condo board and on the Historic Paulus Hook Association; and was an Election Officer for the Board of Elections.
In the year 2000. Dorcey received the Jersey Journal “Everyday Hero Award for Quality of Life” for her “…selfless devotion to our community.” This award was granted four years after being mentored by Audrey Zapp, “The Godmother of Liberty State Park.” Audrey, recognized Dorcey’s civic commitment, had asked Dorcey to work with her for Liberty State Park prior to Audrey’s move to Colorado to be near her son and grandchildren. Audrey, and many others, were very proud of her accomplishments in “the peoples’ interest”. In 2012 Dorcey received The Mayors “Women in Action Award” and in 2018 received the Friends of Liberty State Park’s “The Audrey Zapp Lifetime Activism Award”, her most cherished award. Recognition of Dorcey’s community service is included in John Gomez’s “Legendary Locals of Jersey City”.
Dorcey donated to many charities to protect animals in their natural communities. Her favorite charity is “Defenders of Wildlife”.
In addition to her husband, Dorcey is survived by three brothers, John Yaskell of Groveland, MA, Peter Yaskell of Cary, NC, and Steven Yaskell of Mt. Holly, VT.
A service and gathering will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2019 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm in Morello Funeral Home, Inc., 3720 Nicholas Street, Easton, PA (Palmer Twp).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to Defenders of Wildlife, 1130 17th Street, NW, Washington, DC, 20036, or at www.defenders.org <http://www.defenders.org/>. Online condolences may be offered at www.morellofuneralhome.com.
