How Railroads Were Responsible for Standard Time:
Speaker: Historian Roland Pentilla
Date: Saturday, May 27th, Time:10 am
Location: WHEELS (1100 Second Street, NW)
Fee: Free. Donations Encouraged
Roland Pentilla will lecture about how the U.S. Railroads caused everyone to think about time across the entire country. No longer were people traveling at the pace of walking or behind a horse in a buckboard. In the 1880s, every town established its own time based on a guess of high noon. Someone in the town would ring a bell or other noisemaker to announce noon. Everything before that was morning and everything after was afternoon. Once travel on the railroad was possible, there needed to be a common understanding of the time in a broader area. So, it was the railroad industry that created the need for common time and the time zones we use today.

Exhibits:
Box Seats from Tingley Field
Tingley Field (originally named Apprentice Field and then Rio Grande Park) was a baseball stadium in Albuquerque, which served as the home of professional baseball in Albuquerque from 1932 to 1968.
The site of Tingley Field was originally one of several public baseball fields used by Albuquerque's various semi-professional teams in the early 20th century. One of these teams was the Apprentices, made up of Santa Fe Railroad employees. In the late 1920s the Apprentices leased the field and built a fence and wooden grandstand with a capacity of roughly 1,000.
The stadium was located at the intersection of 10th Street and Atlantic Avenue, across the street from the Rio Grande Zoo.
Model Steam Engine
Our youngest WHEELS volunteer, Andrew Delgado, has refurbished the model “Atlantic Type” steam engine donated to WHEELS by the Explora Museum. Andrew has the model running and it is a hands-on exhibit in which visitors can control the locomotive on its stationary platform.
