On Wednesday, October 14, FOSM volunteers will fell the 32-inch dead Ponderosa pine cigar butt tree in the Ski Area Overflow Parking Area. I will be getting a free wood hauling permit from Crystal Powell, SRD Ranger, so that Jerry Carroll can legally haul this donation wood to the ranger station. We will buck this large tree into 12-inch to 15-inch lengths and, if necessary, split it into smaller pieces that we can handle safely.
We need swampers, sawyers, and wood splitters. The crew will be divided into teams of 5 or fewer volunteers each.
Please bring sledge hammers and steel splitting wedges. Also, bring a warm jacket, because the mornings are especially cool at the Guard Station.
We will meet at 8 AM at the FOSM Guard Station behind the Ranger Station to fuel chain saws, collect equipment and supplies and present the JHA (Job Hazard Analysis).
Wear long pants, long sleeve shirt, and sturdy boots with slip-resistant soles. Bring a face mask, lunch, snacks, lots of water, hard hat, eye and ear protection, and work gloves. If you do not have a hard hat, one will be provided. We will travel to the work sites with just one person in each vehicle unless some volunteers are in the same family.
