Hello Everyone,
On Thursday, April 29, eleven FOSM volunteers felled 14 marked hazard trees in five areas in Cienega Canyon Picnic Area.
- Two-vehicle parking place between restrooms 1 and 2 – Jerry Carroll, Ray Carroll, and Beth Carroll felled a 13-inch oak and a 23-inch diameter fir at this site.
- Picnic area across the road from the second restroom -- Dan Benton, Sam Beard, and Lou Romero felled a 13-inch diameter box elder.
- Picnic area up canyon behind second restroom – Bob and Sally Lowder and Byron Garner felled eight marked trees in this area. In this area, Dan, Lou, and Sam cut off
a large oak branch and a small branch, and then spent considerable time removing the widow maker.
- Picnic area near bridge at upper parking lot – Eric Russell and Cliff Giles felled a 10-inch diameter oak between two picnic tables and a 15-inch diameter oak on a steep
hillside. Jerry Carroll and his crew removed a low hanging branch at a picnic table.
- Fence around Cienega Spring at upper parking lot-- Sam Beard, Dan Benton, and Lou Romero felled a 24-inch diameter fir near the fence. The top of this tree hit the trunk
of a 42-inch diameter fir that Kerry Wood, Cibola National Forest, felled several months ago.
Project photos are presented in the attached Word files.
We appreciated the work done by Jerry Carroll’s brother and niece who were visiting him.
In the coming weeks, FOSM volunteers will continue felling hazard trees selected by Russell Berman, SRD Trails Foreman, in the other picnic areas.
