Hello Everyone:
Yesterday, Monday, May 3, 2021, the FOSM Trails Maintenance Crew hiked Wagon trail to the Cienega Horse Bypass trail, then to Faulty trail, Faulty south to Armijo trail and finally Acequia trail to address previously reported hazards and to possibly find
more. (Which we usually do.)
A broken top suspended "widow maker" had been reported adjacent to the Cienega Horse Bypass trail. Upon arrival at the reported location it appeared that the hazardous hang-up had been blown to the ground by the recent strong winds. It was protruding into
the trail, so it was removed.
Also reported was a small tree leaning over the Santa Fe Trail medallion tree near the Faulty/Armijo junction. The leaning tree was evaluated. It was found to be very well supported and at this time did not pose a hazard to those viewing the medallion.
If this tree should become unstable in the future, it can be removed.
A large dead fir tree about fourteen inches in diameter, had fallen along the uphill side of Armijo trail. It was supported at its top by a bent-over oak tree. It was put on the ground and stabilized so it would not roll into the trail below. The crew
also removed a few small trees that were leaning over or into the trail and posed a possible hazard to users. Other minor maintenance was performed as needed. Trees removed or stabilized ranged in size from about three to fourteen inches in diameter.
Monday's crew consisted of Sim Cook, Byron Garner, Bill Savage, David McCreery, Cleve Sharp and Bob Lowder. Please see attached Word document for photos and additional narrative.
Thanks again to everyone who takes the time to report problems they encounter on their hikes in the Sandias. Our crew relies on these reports to schedule our work.
