Yesterday, the FOSM Trails Maintenance Crew hiked Cienega trail to remove previously reported fallen trees and to address any other problems discovered. A total of six trees or portions thereof measuring from six to sixteen inches in diameter were removed. This included trees that were fallen, hung-up, protruding into the trail or posing a significant tripping hazard. A crosscut saw and other hand tools were used for this work. The crew did not hike higher than the large fallen fir as no problems had been reported above that location. Downhill hikers reported no problems higher up, so it is assumed that Cienega is now clear along its entire length.

Sandia mountain weather appears to have entered its monsoon phase as the morning was cool and very humid, warming rapidly toward mid-day. Vegetation along the trail is very dense and flowers are everywhere. Hikers should note that the rains have created areas where either damp soil or rocks can create very slippery conditions, particularly for the steep sections, which just about defines the entire length of Cienega trail.
