Hello Everyone,

On Saturday, July 16, the FOSM project will be removing the trees described by Scott Dietrich, Sandia Nordic Ski Club President, in the email below.

Meet at 8 am a the FOSM Guard Station behind the Ranger Station. Wear long pants, a long sleeve shirt, and sturdy boots with slip-resistant soles. Bring snacks, lunch, eye and ear protection, drinks, rain gear, hard hat, and work gloves. If you do not have a hard hat, one will be provided.

We will drive to Ellis Trailhead, open the large gate, and drive down the Service Road. If you have to leave early, you should probably park at Ellis TH and walk down the road. We will lock the red gate after we drive through.

Please let me know if you plan to work to help me decide which saws to take with us.

Hi Sam,

The additional trees that Kerry flagged in the SNSC area are all along the Klaus trail section.  We had not flagged Klaus previously.

There are roughly 10-12 standing trees, both live and dead, that need to be felled including a large (diameter ~ 24") cigar butt that is roughly 20' tall.  Most of the standing trees are 12-16" in diameter range.  There are also a few large downed trees that Jeff and I already limbed.  They are also roughly 24" in diameter.

Most of the trees are located on the south end of the Klaus trail.  The easiest access would be to start at the southern end of the Rocky Point trail and hike north about 1/4 mile to where it crosses Klaus.  There are several trees in that area.  The large cigar butt is about another 1/3 mile north and can be accessed from the Service road just south of the Gravel Pit.

I am available on Saturday and can lead the crew to the work sites and swamp.  It would be great if I could also get some time on the chainsaw, as I have not gotten any time since my A certification.

Please let me know if you need any additional information.

Thank you, as always, for your support of the Sandia Nordic trails.

Scott
