Great reminders for us, especially given the hazard tree removal efforts and associated bucking & limbing happening in the high Sandias right now.

Both of these attached incidents occurred during rather "simple" cutting operations (i.e., not felling giant, scary trees, but rather limbing much smaller ones) very similar to much of what we do here on SRD. Risk doesn't necessarily decrease with decreasing tree size. Use your chain brake, watch where your hands, feet, and saw bar are relative to each other, and always anticipate and take steps to avoid any kickback potential. Don't get complacent with the "easy" stuff!

Subject: Recent Chainsaw RLS Documents

Two recent Rapid Lesson Sharing documents – both chainsaw lacerations (one in R2 and one in R3) potentially worth sharing with crews, vols and partners out there during the field season. Injuries most likely being result of saw handling/saw op technique as a result of new skills or feeling hurried.

The South Rim RLS seems to miss a “lesson learned” that of technique and a sawyer having a single hand on the saw near the trigger rather than the front handle.

Maybe a good tailgate discussion!
