Hello Everyone,
The attached Word document is a report of a small hydrothermal explosion that occurred in Yellowstone NP on June 13, 2026.
These non-volcanic events are caused by ground water that comes in contact by very high temperature magma. The resulting extremely violent steam generation causes the explosion.
Fifty-four craters in the Banco Bonito area of the Jemez Mountains near Redondo Campground were caused by hydrothermal explosions thousands of years ago.
Friends and I have visited approximately a dozen of these Jemez craters. The largest ones are a few hundred feet in diameter and about 90 feet deep.
