About the Speaker:
Deborah Jojola is a Tiwa (Isleta) and Towa (Jemez) artist whose work is deeply rooted in Indigenous land-based knowledge, ancestral teachings, and environmental awareness. Her practice centers on natural materials gathered from landscapes connected to memory,
story, and cultural significance. Through travel, long walks, and time spent on the land, she studies cultivated earth soils, pigment veins in arroyos and mesas, and ancestral sites that hold generations of knowledge.
As a working artist, Deborah has exhibited her work at national and international museums and was selected for Artist in Residences throughout her career. Exhibitions include Yekaterinburg, Russia, Tokyo, Japan. Gallery shows include Landmark Art Gallery-University
of Texas Tech, Lubbock, Texas. The Museum of Contemporary Native Arts in Santa Fe, 516 Arts Museum, and One Gallery- ABQ City Hall. Her art is in permanent museum collections throughout the world. New Mexico Public Art is a venue that has incorporated her
Fresco artwork in places throughout the state of New Mexico. Deborah has severed as the former curator of exhibitions at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque, NM. As an independent curator, she has previously worked on exhibitions with local Native
artists for a Native Artist Mural exhibition at the South Broadway Cultural Center-ABQ, NM. In her work, Deborah explores and utilizes centuries-old art forms, symbols of the past, while creating unique symbolic imagery for the future. Her art carries a dialogue
of history and resilience with an understanding of the environmental relationships that embrace all life.
Deborah Jojola’s mural/map, The Tiwa World, is located in the Tijeras Pueblo Museum. The piece explores the artist’s personal and community-based history and how Pueblo people and cultures relate to the land. In her work, Jojola illustrates how community encompasses
the land and its surroundings and how place and culture are linked to the important resources of water, sun/moon/earth, for planting, irrigation, and ceremony. Research conducted by the artist included information collected by archaeologists and through consultation
with elders from the Pueblo of Isleta.
Hope to see you next Tuesday at 5:30PM!
Sincerely,
Kerry Jones
