Presents
Data-mining, Privacy, and Surveillance in New Mexico
Saturday August 21st, 2004
8:30 am - 5:00 pm
The Inn at Sunrise Springs, Atrium Room, Santa Fe
Join the ACLU of New Mexico and leading local and national
experts as we explore the relationships between national security, the
growing availability of consumer information and the reasonable expectation
of privacy in our daily lives, in the courts, and in our legislature. This
conference is offered for CLE credit. To find out more information or to
register, please go to our website www.aclu-nm.org or call 505-266-5915.
"We are thrilled to bring such a prominent group of
experts on this critical civil liberties topic to New Mexico... Although
most New Mexicans still don't appreciate the extent and implications of
data-mining in their everyday lives, data-based surveillance is the foremost
threat to the culture of freedom in America. Under Attorney General John
Ashcroft, the Department of Justice has ushered in an era of data-collection
and profiling that will receive increasing attention as Americans begin to
feel the impact of surveillance on their lives."
- Peter Simonson, Executive Director for the ACLU of New
Mexico
Highlighted speakers at the conference include:
* Randall Marshall, ACLU of Florida Legal Director and
counsel in the medical privacy case Rush Limbaugh v. State of Florida. This
case involves the right of Rush Limbaugh to maintain the privacy of his
medical records. The precedent set in this case will impact the security of
medical records and the privacy of the doctor-patient relationship.
* Shelley Curran, Policy Analyst for the West Coast
Consumers Union in California. Her areas of policy expertise in credit and
finance policy issues are in second tier financial services, consumer
financial privacy and identity theft. She was instrumental in working on
the model financial data privacy legislation that was passed in California.
* Kevin L. Shepherd is chair of the Patriot Act Working
Group created by the American College of Real Estate Lawyers (ACREL), and
the chair of the Patriot Act Task Force of the ABA Section of Real Property,
Probate and Trust Law. Shepherd is the co-chair of the Real Estate Practice
Group of Venable LLP in Baltimore, Maryland and is chair of the firm's
Finance Committee.
* Our keynote speaker is Kevin Bankston, a fellow with the
Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) in San Francisco. EFF is among the
leading organizations working to protect rights in the digital world.
Founded in 1990, EFF engages in advocacy and litigation to support free
expression and privacy online.
We look forward to hosting you at the Data Privacy
Symposium.
