[LWVNM Action] Shameful use of race & ethnicity in redistricting debate

Since Native American consensus was included in both the House & the Senate maps there most likely will not be a Voting Right Act lawsuit unless it comes from the Hispanic community - not sure what the basis for that would be.
The other question is the 10% total deviation in population per district that was used (this was in the Redistricting Act)  rather than the traditional plus or minus 5%. Because of the census under count in the Navajo Nation the CRC allowed about a 7 percent deviation - we think justifiably. That meant other districts only were allowed 3% deviation. Some said this was a violation of the "one person, one vote" principle. Too much in the weeds for me.

 Dick:
I totally agree.  What's the likelihood that there will be a lawsuit over the results of redistricting?  Or are we at the end?

The NM Legislature, especially the Senate, should be ashamed of their use of race to cover up their attempts
at protection of incumbents.
Senate Democrats used it as a cover for the incumbent protection district manipulation that was done in the Democratic caucus
One thing that was never mentioned in the Senate debate was that CRC Senate concept maps A-1 and C-1 both had Native American consensus.
It was implied on the Senate & House floor that one of the reasons for changing the CRC map was to include Native American consensus.
Senate Republicans used it to criticize the Democrats when they were really concerned about the pairing of 2 Republican Senators.

This is a dangerous tactic and adds to the already divisive sentiments in the country and the state. Senators of both sides should be held accountable.
