Senator Wirth & Speaker Egolf both pointed out that the major attraction to seniors locating here is our low property tax.

One of the bills (SB 49) does propose to limit the income that can be earned by people receiving the exemption for Social Security -- but the cap on income is relatively high.
Some of those who support this do so as a defensive measure, wanting to help us compete with other states for Social Security recipients who may be relocating.  These are more likely to be people of higher incomes.
It might make sense to consider this as part of a tax reform program but we have a history of cutting taxes in NM and then having to cut spending because tax increases are unpopular.

 Good question Judy.
Since I was told that every year the legislative priorities and positions are selected based on previous LWVNM discusiones and voted positions, can somebody please send me the date and document when the discussion and position of the LWVNM on NM Social Security Exempt Taxation took place.
I’m sure that everybody knows that the NM Governor, Think New Mexico, and the AARP, among others had all publicly stated their support for the SS Exempt Legislation. Currently, there are only 12 states nationwide that taxed Social Security and New Mexico is one of them.
Why has the LWVNM decided to oppose the legislation change? Does anybody understands how this action in our records is not going to help the League to recruit new members, and keep current ones?
With hope for internal meaningful changes,
