[LWVNM Action] Requesting support for SJR3

I am hoping the Action Committee will support SJR3. This amendment removes
the requirement that judges run in a partisan election prior to running in
retention elections.

The action committee might use the state league position "Selection of
Judges." That says

"LWVNM believes that judges of the New Mexico state courts, i.e. Supreme
Court, Court of Appeals, District Courts, and Metropolitan Courts should be
appointed by the governor from a screened list submitted by a non-partisan
nominating commission and only be subject, at intervals, to non-partisan
election for retention or rejection."

This might disincentivize a difficult problem Central New Mexico faced in
the last election.  One second judicial district court judge and two
Albuquerque Metropolitan Court judges announced their retirement in August
with little warning. The new appointments were not made until mid-September,
so late, that CNM did not have time to send questions to the new appointees
and simply had to list them as 'late additions to the ballot' in our printed
Voter Guide. After some inquiry, it appears the retirements were announced
at a time designed to allow the new appointments to run in a partisan
election with no opposition. Everyone involved was a democrat. There is no
question about the legality. It was simply troubling behavior. We have been
searching for a way to avoid this problem in the future.
