During the 2023 session we saw most gun safety legislation die in one committee or another. Why?
Legislative leaders hesitate to bring them up for debate because they know it will lead to long debates that will block other important legislation.
What does this have to do with redistricting- everything.
We know that public opinion supports reasonable gun safety regulation, but with our current redistricting process, that is irrelevant.
Redistricting of the New Mexico House and Senate is far more about incumbency protection (creating safe Republican & Democratic seats) than it is about partisan politics. That means that legislators have to worry far more about primaries than they do about the general election.
That is why we need to continue to push for an independent redistricting commission.
