There are several measures being proposed on this issue. The interim Indian
Affairs and Health and Human Services Committees endorsed the legislation
we are supporting, which is sponsored by Senators Antoinette Sedillo Lopez
and Pinto and Representative Ferrary. This year’s version is a hybrid bill
focused reducing alcohol-related harms and treatment. “Key updates include
the combination of excise and sales tax proposals to address disparate
health impacts, particularly on Native Americans, African Americans, and
Latinos. The hybrid bill aims to raise taxes to match inflation and
decrease consumption. The group discussed the importance of public health
strategies and the potential of managed alcohol programs (MAPs) to provide
housing and services for those with alcohol use disorders.” Opposition from
alcohol industry and hospitality companies is expected to be fierce again,
which is why NM hasn’t been able to raise any alcohol taxes in 40 years.
The sponsors and coalition members have “highlighted the need for continued
support from legislative committees and the public, emphasizing the
importance of maintaining momentum through awareness campaigns and
educational efforts.”
