Today Senator Natalie Figueroa introduced Senate Joint Resolution 9 - Independent Redistricting Commission
What would it do: If the New Mexico Legislature passes Senate JointResolution 9 (detailed in attachment) by a simple majority in both chambers of theLegislature, it would put the question of creation of an independentredistricting commission on the ballot in the next general election. If passedby a simple majority of the voters, it would assign the responsibility forredistricting of the state legislative districts and the districts of otherstate offices requiring redistricting to an independent redistrictingcommission separate from the legislature. The legislature would be charged withdeveloping enabling legislation that follows the letter and spirit of theamendment.
Note: New Mexico does not have an initiative petitionprocess.
