School Vaccine Debate: Public Health and Parents' Rights

In the ongoing debate over school vaccination policies, Utah Rep. Stephanie Gricius (R) and Connecticut Rep. Josh Elliott (D) highlight the complex considerations lawmakers face in the latest installment of “State of Play,” a bipartisan video series created by A Starting Point and NCSL. All 50 states and Washington D.C. have laws requiring certain vaccines for students to attend school. Many states align their vaccine requirements with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. Since 2021, lawmakers have generated more than 2,500 vaccine-related bills, about 400 of which were introduced during the 2024 legislative sessions, as reflected in NCSL’s State Public Health Legislation Database.

More states are giving paid parental leave, especially to state workers. This year, Alabama, Iowa and Mississippi joined 37 other states in granting the leave to thousands of state workers, Stateline reports.
