No they don’t listen!
Ground Hog Day!
Several years ago, Regis Pecos worked long and hard with the tribes and
nations to create the Tribal Remedy Framework, which shows what is needed
to satisfy the Yazzie segment of the Yazzie/Martinez lawsuit.
In our Tribal Law Study, I wrote the Education article, which links to the
framework. I explained what is going on in the fragmented
multi-jurisdictional system. It’s on the website under Program if you’re
interested.
Indigenous students have the lowest levels of academic proficiency in NM.
Regis was one of my panelists on the NM Listens Education webinar. He has
appeared frequently at the legislature in committees and has testified as
the nationally recognized expert on the subject. One time, he presented the
findings to the whole legislature when Steinhaus was PED secretary. Deja
vu.
Last session, Derrick Lente proposed a massive increase for Indian
education in a bill that would have passed. It was already part of the
state budget proposal and would have funded the overhaul needed to address
deficiencies. Regis spoke on the floor again. As I recall, Lente’s bill
passed, but he withdrew it inexplicably. I don’t understand what happened.

Please see that ICivics lists 4 branches of government-tribal is the 4th.
NM has the highest percentage of Indigenous people in the country.
