August often marks a season of transition. Students head back to school,
local governments prepare for the months ahead, and communities continue
making decisions that affect daily life across New Mexico. These are the
moments when people need accurate, local information they can trust. Strong
local journalism helps residents understand not only what's happening, but
why it matters and how they can engage with the issues shaping their
communities.
At the New Mexico Local News Fund, we're proud to support the journalists,
newsrooms, and community storytellers working every day to strengthen civic
life across our state. Through collaborative reporting, community
partnerships, and investments in local news, we're helping ensure New
Mexicans have access to the information they need to stay informed,
connected, and engaged.
*Survivors’ Truth Commission to Present Interim Report and Investigative
Update*
*Santa Fe, NM* — The Survivors’ Truth Commission of the New Mexico House of
Representatives will convene its next public meeting on *Wednesday, August
5, 2026, at 1 p.m.*. The Commission will present its interim report,
provide a public presentation summarizing its investigative process and
findings to date, report on responses to previously issued subpoenas, and
discuss next steps in its work.
The Commission prepared its interim report in accordance with the July 31
reporting deadline. To ensure all members could participate in person, the
earliest available meeting date was August 5.
*WHAT:* Public meeting of the Survivors’ Truth Commission, including a
presentation of the Commission’s interim report
*WHEN:* Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. MDT
*WHERE:* New Mexico State Capitol, Room 307. The meeting will also be
available via Zoom

Free National Press Foundation Fellowship for Journalists
The *National Press Foundation (NPF)* is accepting applications for an
upcoming, no-cost journalism training opportunity designed to help
reporters deepen their expertise and strengthen local coverage.
-
*Local Business Journalism Fellowship* *(Apply by August 10)*: An
in-person fellowship focused on strengthening local business reporting
through practical training, expert-led sessions, and peer learning.
The fellowship is free to attend and includes travel, hotel accommodations,
and most meals. Participants will learn from subject-matter experts and
experienced journalists while gaining practical tools to bring more
nuanced, community-centered reporting back to their newsrooms.

*Next Gen Journalist highlights emerging journalists shaping the future of
local news in New Mexico. In each edition, we spotlight one of our fellows
or interns and the work they are doing to strengthen storytelling,
accountability, and community connection.*
*The Chile Wrapper Launches to Strong Community Response*
Congratulations to *David Silva*, editor and project director of *The Chile
Wrapper*, on the successful launch of the publication's first issue. The
debut print run of 150 copies was quickly picked up by readers, with local
businesses signing on as advertisers, community members contributing
stories and photographs, and organizations reaching out to collaborate.
With such an enthusiastic response from the Hatch community, work is
already underway on Issue #2.
New Mexico’s Inspection of Public Records Act (IPRA) is one of the state’s
most powerful tools for democratic accountability. Enshrined in statute as
a declaration that a representative government is dependent upon an
informed electorate, public records are made available to allow scrutiny of
the workings of government and to hold public officials to account.
Additional task force meetings are currently scheduled for the following
cities and dates:

Investigative Correspondent
Remote (Santa-Fe) / Full-Time
The New Mexico investigative correspondent will produce sharp, accessible
political journalism on an assigned coverage lane that’s delivered in
multiple formats such as on-camera videos, articles, and graphic carousels.
You’ll launch, own, and grow an audience-focused product (video series,
newsletter, etc.) that builds trust and engagement over time. The beat
correspondent will also review insights and learnings from audience data
and feedback to inform content strategy.
This role will have an emphasis on the state legislature and the criminal
justice system. The ideal candidate has experience with, or interest in,
finding the impactful information buried in court filings or mentioned in
committee meetings, and breaking down the information in a clear,
digestible way that resonates with COURIER’s audience.
This is a highly entrepreneurial role for someone excited to reach new
audiences underserved by legacy media and help strengthen civic engagement
in New Mexico.

Director of Communications & Development at the New Mexico Local News Fund.
It's been a privilege to help tell the story of local journalism in New
Mexico over the past year. I've had the opportunity to meet remarkable
journalists, community leaders, students, and news organizations working
every day to ensure New Mexicans have access to trustworthy,
community-centered reporting. Watching this network grow and witnessing the
collaboration, innovation, and resilience across our state's news ecosystem
has been one of the most rewarding parts of my work.
Thank you for reading, sharing, attending events, supporting local news,
and believing in the importance of this mission. Every conversation,
partnership, and act of support strengthens the future of local journalism
in New Mexico.
While this is my last newsletter, the work continues. I know the New Mexico
Local News Fund will keep investing in the people and organizations
