SUFFRAGE CENTENNIAL -The 100th Anniversary of Women Winning the Vote and the 100th Anniversary of the League of Women Voters of New Mexico

 

Tune in to Women’s Focus this SATURDAY, January 25, noon on KUNM-FM, 89.9 to hear about the celebration planned for February 6 at the State Capitol and about the League’s history and priorities. Host Carol Boss will interview live LWVNM History Committee Members, Meredith Machen, Jeanne Logsdon, and Karen Wentworth.   Panelists will discuss the relevance of the suffrage movement to today’s struggles for equal rights and opportunity. Host Lorene Mills interviews Hannah Burling, President of the League of Women Voters of New Mexico and Meredith Machen, Educator and Former LWVNM President, about the historic struggle for the women’s voting rights nationally and in New Mexico.

 

The celebration will be held at the NM State Capitol on February 6 starting at 12:30 p.m., is hosted  by the League of Women. Historical documents and photos will be on display as well as information from the League’s nonpartisan partners, including AAUW, NOW, ACLU, NAACP, Common Cause, Planned Parenthood, and the Southwest Women’s Law Center.

The event will feature suffragist costumes, original suffrage songs by Santa Fe 9th grader Fionnuala Moore, cake and lemonade, and speeches from Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, LWVUS CEO Virginia Kase, NM Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver, legislators, and other esteemed political figures. Memorials celebrating the Suffrage Centennial will be presented in the House and Senate around 11 am.
