*Subject: Grand Canyon Adopt A Beach Volunteers *

* *

*Celia Southwick is looking for people (who are going on a Grand Canyon
River trip this year) who would be willing to take photos at the
designated location of River Mile 12.2 (Left) known as Salt Wash Beach
on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon.*

*Last Year I recruited members and/or their friends who had trips on the
Grand Canyon to help take pictures of a beach that I adopted as a
Private Boater. Usually GC River Guides do this because it is
the guides who go down several times a year. By organizing a series of
private trip volunteers who are willing to stop there briefly and help
record the project we can accomplish the same thing.*

*This is now an 8 year Long-term-research project to help determine
water release issues affecting the beaches. The net result is that they
are disappearing in the Grand and while the big releases last November
resulted in beach build up in the upper canyon the beaches in the lower
gorge and canyon did not fair so well. Pictures now are of significance
due to that release and can impact from the flow regime of water from
the dam.*

*The Adopt A Beach Program can be checked out on the
**http://www.gcrg.org/** web site (grand canyon river guides- of which
anyone can be a member, not just guides). Joe Polloch is the person I
work with on this project. The data is collected thru-out the year and
the camera sent back in November.*

*The long and short of it - The beach I (we) have adopted is River Mile
12.2 Salt Wash Beach, so is early in the trip and the camera can be put
away until the end.*

*I will coordinate the trips and make arrangements with individuals to
get the Adopt-A-Beach Packet (w/ waterproof camera) to them and the
return as well.*

*Aside from the project, the beach is a nice place for a lunch stop and
there are Nevil's Inscriptions from the 1940’s on the cliffs above the
sand bar. It does not look like an ideal camp anymore but I suppose it
could be used in a pinch if you need to (can send you photos on e-mail).*
