[Awclist] river questions -- Pecos

The "best" run is the de-facto wild and/or wilderness below Villanueva
State Park. It's a long one-day run to Tecolotito. Shuttles can be had from
Alex Gonzales at 421-1823 or from boaters who might be hanging around in
the area.
There are two irrigation dams that I always portage because the thought of
dropping 6 or 12 feet onto wet concrete blocks while sitting on my butt in
a plastic sleeve is less attractive to me than to some younger people. The
portages are easy. I ran it the last two weekends and encountered about 3
fences. We floated (barely) through them without having to lift our rafts
over.
We ran a 12' paddle boat, a variety of hard boats, and a 14' self bailer
oar rig. Hydraulics are not a problem on this mostly Class II run but there
are some real rock dodges and a couple of III+ places to beware of. One of
those is Harpoon Rapid (find my story, "The Rescue of John's Boat," in the
Waiting List magazine of GCPBA a few years ago) where the water fire hoses
onto an undercut cliff. It's easy to see it coming. Just be ready to scout
what you can't readily read from your boat.
