Hello All,

As many of you might already be aware, there was a drowning incident on the Lower Box yesterday. The news has shown up in the Taos paper, the Santa Fe New Mexican and the Albuquerque Journal.

In my opinion, the main message should be that the water is especially dangerous right now. Please be careful, be prepared, keep an eye out for fellow paddlers and lend a hand whenever possible. Think safety!

Unfortunately, the papers have conveyed some alternate messages such as blame and assumptions of inexperience and ill-preparedness.These assumptions were neither fair nor constructive. The fact remains that paddling is particularly hazardous right now and this could have happened to anyone!

One of our members was a guide in the group that had this accident. I'm sure he, the other members of the group and the victim's family and friends could really use the club's support right now. If you would like to pass anything along to them, you can reply to me and I will pass it on.

It is unfortunate that this happened, but should be a reminder to everyone to be on their toes right now, be safe and use your best judgement. Until we grow gills, let's do everything we can to stay safe on the water.

Thanks,

Sara Traub, President
Adobe Whitewater Club of New Mexico
