  RIVER RUNNING IN ANWR

Moving swiftly downriver we saw them - talk instantly ceased and
paddling slowed to just enough to steer into the icy shore. They held
their ground while our eight pairs of eyes fastened on hundreds of
theirs. Our memory is of silence, but the air had to be roaring
with intensely cold water rushing past the 'aufeis", thick clouds
bounding up and down the high windy peaks and clattering stones under
clicking hooves of caribou - lots and lots of caribou. This was the
Kongakut
River, a river that flows North through the Brooks Range to the
Beaufort
Sea on the
eastern edge of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Please join Adobe Whitewater Club members Rip Harwood, Robert
Southwick, Chuck Houston, Jim Brainard, and Christianne Hinks for a
slide presentation of their summer 2005 trip through this spectacular
area. They'll also show a film
from the Alaska Wilderness League and will encourage discussion about
the oil drilling issue. The meeting will be held on January 10, 2006
from 6:30 to 9:00 P.M. at Los Griegos Multi-media Center, second
building west of 12th Street on Candelaria Boulevard NW in Albuquerque
(east of Rio Grande Boulevard). For further information, please contact
Howard Higgins at (505) 350-5217.
