Commemorate Archaeology Month at Grand Canyon National Park Grand Canyon, 
AZ. The Tusayan Museum staff at Grand Canyon National Park is celebrating 
Arizona Archaeology Month by hosting its annual Archaeology Day from 10:00 
AM 4:00 PM Saturday, March 18, 2006.

Standard park entrance fees apply.

Archaeology provides an opportunity to learn about shared cultural 
experiences through exploration of the past. Join park staff for 
archaeological programs and tours of an 800-year old ancestral Puebloan home.

Dress warmly as some of the activities will be held outside.

Schedule of Events:

10:00 AM & 3:00 PM; "How and Why Archaeologists Classify Artifacts" 
Discover how ceramics and historic artifacts get classified by 
participating in a hands on activity. Archaeologist Ellen Brennan and Park 
Ranger Brian Gatlin will be available to answer questions.

11:00 AM & 3:30 PM; "Cultural Demonstration"Join Park Ranger Alice Talakte 
as she illustrates tools that have stood the test of time.12:00 PM & 2:30 
PM; "Saving Our Stories: Archaeology and the Antiquities Act" - Explore the 
science of archaeology and how it relates to our rich national heritage. 
This year commemorates the 100th Anniversary of the Antiquities Act which 
was the first law to acknowledge and preserve the values of our shared 
cultural past.

11:00 AM & 1:30 PM; "Glimpses of Past" Consider the people who called Grand 
Canyon home 800 years ago. How did they thrive in this environment? Tour 
the remains of an ancestral Puebloan Village with a park employee. The tour 
route follows a 0.1 mile (0.2 km) paved trail. Program will last 45 minutes.

Tusayan Museum and Ruin is located 21 miles east of Grand Canyon Village.

10:00 AM; Grand Canyon National Park Museum Collection will be open to the 
fir st fifteen registered visitors. See the largest discovered ancestral 
Puebloan ceramic pot, view a giant sloth skull, the smallest split twig 
figurine, perhaps John Wesley Powell's watch and other selected items from 
the vast park collection. Contact Colleen Hyde or Kim Besom at
