Rio Chama: Discussion of Ways to Provide More Reliable River Flows
2/13/2007 6:30 PM

Tuesday, February 13
REI Clinic Room
1550 Mercantile Ave NE
Albuquerque, NM 87107
*(505) 247-1191*

The "plumbing" of the Chama is very favorable for recreational
management, but its potential hasn't quite been fulfilled. Since 1984,
Club members have benefited from weekend recreational releases from El
Vado Reservoir, even during the past few years of decreasing volume and
uncertainty of flows. The coming year promises to be the most
challenging to date for recreational boating. Albuquerque's new water
project, Bureau of Reclamation's water management plan and the Rio
Grande Compact's prohibition of storage in El Vado will combine to
impact boaters on the Chama during the 2007 season. Boaters can become
involved in the process. Join river conservationist and outfitter,
Steve Harris, for a discussion of how best to balance water for San Juan
Chama Project developments, with water for recreation and the natural
system on the Wild and Scenic Rio Chama.

Steve Harris of Pilar, NM, has been a student of Rio Grande history and
natural history since 1975. He is president of a river outfitting
business, Far-Flung Adventures, and executive director of the basin-wide
streamflow advocacy group, Rio Grande Restoration. His decades of
practical experience on the river includes 10,000 miles on a boat,
dozens of river safety and rescue seminars and advocacy work with
local, state and federal agencies on such complex issues as diminished
stream flow, riparian ecology water policy and watershed restoration
