A FUN WEEKEND in Marble Canyon with FOOD, FACTS, Music, and more..River
Style.
Do you have a Grand Canyon Permit in 2009 or 2010? You may be interested in
picking up some extra information and fun at the upcoming March 27-29, 2009 Grand Canyon
Guides Training Session at the Hatch Warehouse in Cliff, AZ near Marble
Canyon. There is a membership cost of $30 (as a member you also receive the
BQR, a quarterly review publication w/ a lot of interesting information -
check it out on the web site above) and the weekend of information, fun, and
food is $35/person..PLUS, it's a great location. We often try to come a few
days early or stay a few days later checking out some of the many things in
the Lee's Ferry/Marble Canyon area there are to see/hike etc... things you
never have time for when you arrive to rig for a river trip!
All you bring is a chair, your cup, and your interest in the Grand Canyon.
After checking in you get a packet w/ the schedule of activities and related
handouts.
Robert and I went the first year, more curious than anything, but had such a
nice time that we have gone every year since for the last 6 years or so.
You meet great people and great guides who you will also interact with on
the river at times so it is nice to get to know them a bit - courtesy comes
easier when you have met them before. There are some great books and gear
opportunities there as well, often as discounted prices. There has been an
incredible array of speakers and expertise on all kinds of subjects related
to the river. It is a well run meeting by those in charge and not a lot of
lost time spent. Many camp right there or in their vehicles. We usually
drive out to any number of BLM roads that go out to the rim of the canyon -
like the Badger Rapid overlook. Dogs that are well behaved are welcome to
come. We usually leave ours in the truck and check on them during breaks
and lunch. By leaving early Friday morning you can arrive for dinner with a
view of Vermillion Cliffs around you. The Sessions held on Friday may or
may not be of interest as they are more tailored for the guide on the river
(food handler certif. required there).
Again Check the Excel Document GTS2009 for the entire schedule on the
website http://www.gcrg.org/docs/09GTSland-agenda%20.xls
