All,
The last 'family day' we had at the Rio Rancho Aquatics Center had a very good turnout. More than 15 kids and 10 adults turned out. Since many are unable to bring their kids to either Los Altos or Rio Rancho on a normal week night, I'd like to extend this invitation to paddlers of all ages to meet other families, get the little ones in a boat for the first time, and, time permitting, play a few kayak games.

When: Sunday, Feb. 22
What time: 6 - 8pm
Where: Los Altos Pool

One of the hardest parts about teaching is getting someone in a boat for the first time. Kids are no different. Once we get them in the boat, I am certain we can make it fun, entertaining and educational, and they'll want to try it again and again.

We'll have all 8 lanes, which will allow us to play Kayak Polo, Sponge Bob Tag (think 'hot potato'), and hopefully Indoor Slalom (pending some volunteer construction work in the mean time...). I'll cover some basic resues that will teach parents how to get their kids back into the boat from deep water, as well as the 'Hand of God' rescue, T-rescue, and X-rescue. These are great team building skills, and help build the kids trust and confidence in their parents.

The price will be $5/person. Kids and adult boats will be available upon request. While the event is open to anyone, the emphasis should be on uniting families, and creating an opportunity for kids to paddle. All other paddlers, given the space limitations, should consider attending the Los Altos or Rio Rancho week-day sessions.

If you think you and your family would like to attend, or you need a boat for you or your kids, please send me a brief email, so I can keep a headcount.
Cheers,
Kelly
