For Immediate Release:

 

San Juan College (SJC) Outdoor Leadership Program (OLER) has three paddle
related classes that still have some open spaces available. Classes are
during the fall semester and are now open for Non Degree Students and
Community members to register. 

 

Some important notes for interested parties:

.         If the class has a Pre Meeting but you do not live local, This
class requirement can usually be satisfied with E-mail/Phone correspondence.

.         Interested participants need to apply for SJC, this is free and is
easily done  on-line at http://www.sanjuancollege.edu/pages/3535.asp
Participants will need to apply as non-degree seeking students.

.         In-state Tuition per credit is $47.00 and for out-of-state it is
$115.00 per credit.

.         The OLER Program has a camp area on campus and students actively
taking a class are welcome to camp for free.

 

The Classes are:

 


OLER 175-001                       ACA Swift Water Rescue
1 Credit


Lab Fee $20.00                       Start Date:  8/26/2011
End Date:  8/28/2011


This course is aimed at trip leaders, boaters paddling on more challenging
whitewater, and anyone desiring opportunities to develop their rescue
skills. Critical judgment and rescue awareness, impacting both personal and
group safety, are emphasized throughout the course. Although new skills may
be taught, this class focuses on developing judgment and applying skills in
rescue scenarios. Scope and content of the course will vary, based upon
participant needs, interests and experience. Course meets in classroom on
Friday, August 26 from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.  Field sessions are: Saturday,
August 27 and Sunday, August 28, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. 

 

OLER 299- 001                      ACA Level III, Coastal Kayaking
2 credits

Lab Fee:  $90.00                     Start Date:  8/30/2011
End Date:  9/5/2011

Learn to plan and initiate a multi day sea kayak trip while earning your ACA
Coastal III Kayak certification. This fun field based class will cover all
you need to know about sea kayaking on multi day outings in various
conditions and cover rescue, safety and navigation as well. Class will be
held in Navajo Lake and will allow students to explore and camp many
isolated areas on the lake. Class pre-meeting will be Tuesday August 30 from
5:30 pm to 8:30 pm.  Field outing will be held on: Friday, September 2 to
Monday September 5 over the Labor Day weekend.  

 

OLER 299-005                       ACA ICE/IDW Level I-IV, Updates Welcome
3 Credits

Lab fee $100.00                      Start Date: 10/19/2011
End Date 10/23/2011

Become a Certified Whitewater Kayak Instructor with the American Canoe
Association (ACA) River Kayak Instructor Development and Certification
Workshop with Instructor Trainer Kent Ford

includes twenty years of international whitewater racing and coaching,
combined with similar experience teaching recreational boating to all levels
of paddlers. His twenty videos and books on paddle sports have influenced
the education of half a million paddlers. ACA is the best-known
certification in the U.S. for kayak instruction. This course will strengthen
your kayaking skills, provide you with solid teaching methods and creates a
solid background to be a whitewater kayak instructor. The Entire class will
be held in Durango at 4 Corners River Sports and local rivers and lakes.
Class Dates and Times: Wednesday October 19 6:00- 9:00 pm, Thursday October
20- Sunday October 23, 8:00 am to around 7:00 PM.
