This was from the GCPBA listserv:
There has been a big outbreak of Norovirus in the Canyon. Three commercial
>operations have reported problems. In one case all but 2 guides were taken
>down by the virus. The following is part of the communications coming out
>from the Grand Canyon River Guides Association. If you are planning a trip
>in the next few days, please be aware.
It was followed by the same recommendations from Marlene Gaither.
Ciao~

Mary, Tim
Please post on the awc list
For any of you in the AWC or friends who are going on a Grand Canyon trip anytime in the near future...
There was a recent outbreak of the Norovirus on a Grand Canyon trip and wanted to give people a heads up on current posting for preventative steps.

I have attached a sheet detailing Norovirus preventive steps compiled by Marlene Gaither at Coconino County Health. Please remember that people can still be shedding the virus for days after they stop having symptoms.
Another preventive measure which you may already know (it is in the COR's but doesn't appear to be in the Non-Commercial Regulations):
/Hand Washing System: If non-potable water is used, the hand wash bucket must contain at least 100 ppm of chlorine bleach. Use chlorine test strips to determine the chlorine residual in the hand wash water./
And another few suggestions that makes sense:
/Bare hand contact with all ready to eat food such as nuts, cookies and other salty snack food should be avoided./
/Set up a separate toilet for those who are ill /
If anyone needs to refresh their memory of the rules to follow for sanitation, handwashing, illness reporting, etc..., you can review:
*2012 Commercial Operating Requirements: *
http://www.nps.gov/grca/parkmgmt/upload/2012-final-COR.pdf
*Non-Commercial River Trip Operations: *
http://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/upload/Noncommercial_River_Trip_Regulations.pdf/
/
Take all precautions and here's hoping you have a safe, fun (and healthy) river season!
Lynn
