Steve Harris spoke to the AWC meeting last fall on both the Gila and Chama
Rivers

I am sending this out FYI in regards to the Gila  - legislation on deck for
action and you may be able to add your 2cents in by either signing the
petition below or by writing your representative or senator.

It was sent to me because we are signed up with the Gila River Coalition so
get their emails and notices.

Ella Kirk has a new petition to Governor Susana Martinez to protect the Gila
River. 

As you know, this is a critical year for the fate of the Gila, New Mexico's
last free-flowing river. Under the Arizona Water Settlements Act, the New
Mexico Interstate Stream Commission must decide and communicate by December
2014 its decision to the Secretary of the Interior on whether to construct a
diversion structure.  

We need your help to tell Governor Martinez to protect the Gila River by
supporting non-diversion alternatives that meet southwest New Mexico's
long-term water demand, while also maintaining the natural, free flow of the
Gila.

A Gila River diversion project is unnecessary, expensive and will harm the
Gila River.  An overwhelming majority of New Mexicans believe we should use
our current water supplies more wisely and protect the Gila River for
people, wildlife and future generations.  Southwestern New Mexico's future
water needs can be met cost-effectively through non-diversion alternatives,
such as municipal and agricultural conservation, sustainable groundwater
management, effluent reuse and watershed restoration.
