I think the 7.5% happened as the way a fine was applied for not titling the boat when I first bought it in 2010. Some page I read somewhere listed the late fine as half of the 3% applied each year you’re late, so 1.5 x 3 = 4.5 Add that to the original 3 and you get 7.5?? Why wouldn’t the fine be for four years? Beats me, but I can see their software miscounting by one in this case (I’ve done that when programming my robots at work), or you have a year befroe the fine actually kicks in. The only thing I know for certain is that the sky in the MVDweeb’s world is a whole different color than the blue I see.

Late fine when you’re not required to title it in first place?!? There is no interpretation is their world that a raft has different configurations. There should be no late fee. Epecially if you’re trying to make it legal rather than just hope you don’t see a ranger and get busted, NO rangers to be seen at all on my prior two Cat trips (2009 and 2011). A trip over Labor Day reported (mountainbuzz) getting inspected once at the Potash and TWICE on the river. From the report tha video he posted it’s pretty obvious it was a large party trip so I can easily see the rangers giving them extra scrutiny.

The lesson here is that if you ever think you might put a motor on, title the boat when it’s brand new and you have an original MCO (Manufacture’s Certificate of Origin), and invoice listing the HIN (Hull Identification Number) exactly as it is on the MCO. Then suck up the cost of the bi-annual registration when you’re not using a motor. It would also help to heave one invoice for just the boat and another for all the accessories you’re getting too.

I’m done, thanks for listening,
—-Cliff

I'm heading to Cataract Canyon next week and that's the only place I've wanted a motor. Sounds like the rangers are patrolling more than they used to, so I just jumped though that expensive hoops to register my 16' Cataraft. Actually Sotar makes my tubes 15' 11", which I think is hilarious, so I'm not subject to the stupid things that begin to apply for 16' boats or bigger. At least the Type II throwable Device can be replaced with a commercially made throw bag with at least 40' of rope in it.

The uh, 'staff' at the MVD offices [I'm remaining civil just like I did with them yesterday and the day before that], swears that ALL boats (they say over 12' - it's actually over 10') have to be titled; but this page clearly says otherwise:
