[Awclist] Rio Marañón in Peru this December?

I’m heading to Peru in December to run the Rio Marañón and looking for more victims to fill up the trip.

SierraRios.org is a non-profit (based out of San Diego) working to save the Marañón river in Peru (the headwaters of the Amazon) from the Hydro-Dams that are pending [with more proposed]. They offer guided trips and also more of a hybrid trip where you can row one of their rafts or paddle one of their kayaks if you’re qualified, (in both cases). If you ‘work’ the trip, meaning go like it is a private trip where you’re helping with all the camp logistics and cooking; you can get a break off the full suggested contribution of $2500 for the two weeks on river which includes all meals, most of the gear, and the transportation from the rendezvous city to the river.

There are two proposed trips this December, different dates for the same trip actually: a trip down the Central and Lower sections of the Grand Canyon of the Amazon, with a re-supply stop in between. This is the High Flow season and it’s basically a week in the Central section and another week on the Lower section; with proposed dates of Dec. 8th through the ~19th, or later in the month, like the 20th through Jan 2nd. At this point, there are four of us interested in the Dec. 8th date, and a family of 4 from Colorado preferring a late December trip. I’ll arrange my trip around either dates, and am soliciting more participation to ensure a trip gets to the minimum 6-8 people to make it worthwhile for SierraRios.

Actually, come December my passport will have been idle for a couple years, so I’m heading to Peru for the month of December, even without a Marañón trip.

Rocky's web site is a bit scattered but there’s a lot of information there. If this is of any interest to you, please poke around and send questions my way.

Here is a 15 minute excerpt of a documentary about the river:

I’ll explore getting the full movie here for a screening in Abq, like Elisha McArthur did in Salida. Speaking of Elisha; her, Adam and 4 people from New Wave Rafting (owner’s Steve and Kathy, and long time guides Britt and CJ) are going on late Sept trip which includes the Upper section where the Class V rapids are. The Central and Lower sections are Class IIIs and a couple IVs. And Adobe’s own Adam Hill went on a trip last year that started out on the Upper and diverted to the Central and Lower.

Hope there’s some interest out there, and please pass this along to others who may be interested, whether they are whitewater folk or would just like to go along as passengers.

Please and Thank You,
-—Cliff
