The City is updating the Bikeways & Trails Facility Plan, which outlines
Albuquerque’s existing bikeways and trails system, policies,
recommendations, and proposed projects. The plan will guide future
investment in the bikeways & trails system, including facility
improvements, new facilities, maintenance, and education/outreach programs.
The plan does not allocate new funding or cause projects to be completed.
It will serve as a guide for future planning efforts and funding requests
to implement the recommendations.

The ideas and recommendations that have been developed throughout the
planning process will be on display and members of the planning team will
be on-hand to answer questions from the community. A brief presentation
will begin at 5:30 pm during the evening sessions.

The finished facility plan will guide investment, enhancements, and new
trails, bike lanes, and routes across the City for the next 20 years or
more. The current bikeways and trails system includes over 275 miles of
paved and unpaved trails and 343 miles of on-street bicycle facilities. The
goals are to improve safety, close gaps along existing corridors, enhance
maintenance, increase use of the bikeways and trails network, and improve
quality of life in Albuquerque.

Everyone with an interest in the future development of trails and bikeways
is encouraged to come to the open house, view the recommendations and
proposed trails, bike lanes, and routes and ask questions or offer comments
in anticipation of submitting the plan for adoption this summer. The first
public hearing will be held by the Environmental Planning Commission (EPC)
on September 4, 2014 for review and recommendation to the City Council. The
planning team is working towards City Council adoption of the Plan in late
2014.

This is the third of three public information sessions that are included as
part of the planning process. The first two sessions in 2010 were focused
on gathering ideas and input for the future of the City’s bikeway and trail
system, and this session will be focused on reporting back on how these
ideas and issues have been addressed in the Plan.

Community members who cannot attend the open house may learn more about the
planning process and submit comments about the plan online at:
