[NMCycling] Coal rolling in SF

Logically, an employee is very unlikely to the spend the time and money necessary to modify a business owner’s truck so it is capable of spewing rolling coal. Therefore, the business owner probably paid for the vehicle modification and is a rolling coal advocate. However, it is possible the business owner allows the driver to keep the truck overnight, which would allow time for a truly rabid environmental hater to modify the truck. The company’s drivers could be independent contractors and own the truck they drive. In either case the business owner could be unaware that a truck with his business’ name had been modified to have rolling coal capability. I have seen several tow trucks parked overnight daily at residences; indicating these scenarios to be plausible. Larger tow truck companies in Albuquerque I know about have their trucks stored in the business’ yard overnight.

That is a good response but it doesn't mean much until it can be determined if he's really walking the talk. Healthy skepticism...

FYI - My 1995 F350 Blows some serious black smoke if I punch the gas. It has not been modified. All the old trucks can blow smoke and there’s a saying, “If it’s not smoken it’s not a stroking”.
The new diesel hardly blow any smoke and you’d need the mod. The cool thing with the newest diesel is they use Blue Def which turn the exhaust into nitrogen and water, almost no bad emissions.

So, the truck has been purposefully modified, but the owner doesn’t know about it?

I left a review on their FaceBook page and late last night I received this message from them (see below). I like that the owner seems to be receptive and taking responsibility
Mr. Chavez I am the owner and operator of Torrez towing and recovery LLC I was made aware of the situation this morning and was told by several sources of what occurred. I apologize for the situation and assure you that the driver has been reprimanded made aware of how to drive around cyclists by allowingat least 6 feet of room and made aware not to drive The truck in this manner. As you know the grade is very steep and the truck weighs nearly 19,000 pounds but I assure you this will never happen again with any of our drivers or employees.if you would like to speak to me personally about this my number is 505-927-3574 and we can find a way to rectify the situation thank you have a great day.

I would give the business owner the opportunity to correct the behavior. If the driver was the business owner, then reviews are good place to feedback.

Report him to the Public Regulation Commission who regulates tow trucks and can pull his license if they want.
Better yet, look up who your PRC Commissioner is and call them.

Hi Fellow Cyclists,
Today, on the ski road in Santa Fe, myself and another cyclist who was riding alone, had coal rolled in our faces by the driver of this tow truck in two separate incidents.
When I confronted him up the road, he was belligerent and threatening and came at me, using the customary logic that I should not be on the road in the first place.
The ski road in Santa Fe is mostly state park, we are not even talking highway here.
I know you all have many choices as to where to give your business, and I realize that 'rolling coal' is not yet illegal in NM. All I ask that you not use Torrez Towing should you need a tow.

Thanks!
