Thanks to all who replied. Heidi Snell's solution of soaking it in vinegar and then scrubbing with a toothbrush provided decent results (the area where the gum was now looks stained, but the vinegar appears not to have done any additional damage).

Subject: [NMCycling] How to remove Gum from shorts?
Hello, I sat in some grass where somebody had spit gum out. I didn't notice it until next time I got out of the seat and my shorts stuck to the seat. I got most of it out of the seat using ice and scraping with a sharp knife, but I'm afraid to take the sharp knife to the expensive bibs. Scrapping with a stiff plastic putty knife did not work well as the bib material just stretches.
Does anyone have experience and hopefully a successful solution for this?
Craig
