My name is Jerry Garcia and I was a participant in the Bike The Bluff road
race last weekend. First of all I want to send prayers and thoughts to all
the riders, families and friends that were involved in this horrific
accident. Many lives will be forever changed due to this and what I
witnessed will haunt me forever. I consider myself very very lucky and
have been trying to process all this and it's been hard. One thing that has
bothered both Tamatha and I since the morning it happened is the lack of an
escort vehicle or USAC officials to monitor the group and traffic during
the neutral "parade through town" start. I've emailed USAC and requested
that they install a rule that all races and events should be required to
have an escort vehicle during a neutral "parade" start through downtown
areas or areas that are congested. This was the first road race/event that
I participated in that did not have an escort vehicle or USAC official with
the group. I feel that this left us unprotected and vulnerable! This is of
great concern to me for future events especially if the act was deliberate.
Please be safe out there!
Jerry
