That's right.. when we ride in the cycle lanes to the right of the stripe, we all know that passing vehicles will run right up to the edge of that line. They see that as their legal right. Three or five feet rarely come into their thinking

Education and fines are what this law really should address..  DP

The roads don't need to change. If there's room for two-way traffic then there's room to overtake a bike safely.

This is just to get cyclists treated the same as other road users during overtaking. Cars, motorbikes, horses, bicycles, ... which is least likely to be given space right now?

The law alone won't be enough - education is required for all road users. But if we want roads to be safe for all users then we should vocally support this bill.

Let's look at Old Pecos Trail, for instance since you are in SF, The south end has a nice shoulder (technically illegal to ride/drive on- which is posted as a bike lane) it tapers down to about fifteen feet wide as it nears the Round House,  that leave 5 feet more or less for 2  way auto travel. Who's gonna win that battle? I'm not against this law at all, just saying the State is not going to reconfigure all roads to suit a minority group, despite the good intentions.

Hi, HB 192 does not require any reconfiguration of roadways.  Don’t know where you got that.

As you’ll read here, https://imgur.com/9oHPC9L , the exact same Bill (then SB 124) passed all assigned committees and both houses in the legislature in 2011 but was then vetoed by Governor Martinez.

Hope this helps!

Since this new law affects every road and street in the State it is a huge expense to reconfigure all the roadways and I see it doomed to fail.
I think it better to redefine the definition of right side line which delineates the roadways from the shoulder. Most, including Federal law states bikes should stay as close as practicable to that stripe while on the roadway,...not the shoulder.
This needs driver reeducation and serious penalties for striking a cyclist.
Doubt it will get out of committee. Buy a mirror.
