Happy Labor Day Weekend League members-
I wanted to remind you about the September meeting of the League of Women
Voters of Central New Mexico on Thursday, at noon on Zoom.
We've never had an election like this one. We are in the middle of a
pandemic, which makes people reluctant to go in person to the polls.
Absentee balloting is encouraged as a health precaution, but for the first
time during an election cycle there is some doubt about the ability of the
U.S. Postal Service to deliver the return absentee ballots in time. It
sounds like a bad movie plot. But we are all living this one.
This election cycle is so confusing, we've invited Jamie Diaz, Deputy County
Clerk of Bernalillo County who is in charge of making the process work.
League policy prevents us from asking Linda Stover, the county clerk to
speak since she is running for election and will be on the ballot in
November. However, as a member of the league she may join the zoom meeting
as a participant.
Mr. Diaz will speak about several technical procedures including absentee
voting, as well as challenges the County is facing in the current voting
climate. Mr. Diaz began his career in the election field in 1985 in McKinley
County, moving to Bernalillo County in 1998 and retiring in 2010. In both
counties, his position was Bureau of Election Administrator. Mr. Diaz has
administered elections through four voting systems, with the current system
being the Dominion Voting System. Diaz has administered election through
three Voter Registration systems, with the current system being SERVIS. He
came out of retirement in 2017 to assist County Clerk Linda Stover in her
terms. Diaz is currently one of the County Clerks appointed Deputy County
Clerks, concentrating on the administration of Voter Registration and
Election Administration.
