NOTE:
The Zoom log-in link for the APWF April meeting is below—please keep it and use it on April 11.
Albuquerque Press Women and Friends will meet virtually by Zoom on Monday, April 11, 12 noon to
discuss the guardianship issue which could potentially affect any one of us.
Our invited speakers are Kent Walz, senior editor at the Albuquerque Journal, who has written several stories about this, and Colleen Heild, investigative reporter, who has also covered the topic including this recent story:

To attend, you must RSVP to Karen Wentworth at:
karen.wentworth3 at gmail.com
no later than 9 p.m. Sunday, April 10
so she can put you on the list to be allowed into the Zoom meeting.
To protect our privacy and prevent unwelcome spammers, etc., only those on this approved list are allowed in.
If you have not previously participated with Albuquerque Press Women and Friends, please give Karen one sentence identifying yourself–that is a safety measure for all our participants.
If an elderly or disabled person appears not to be competent to take care of his or her personal affairs, it is possible for someone–not necessarily family—to take the issue to court and get the court to assign a guardian for that person. The court-appointed guardian, who could be a complete stranger or a professional guardianship service, could potentially take over the “protected” person’s life, including management of their money and property.
The guardianship issue was brought to the attention of New Mexicans by a series in the Albuquerque Journal in 2016. You can refresh your memory by reading the original series here:

Since this series called our attention to it, there have been a few reforms, but maybe not enough for us all to feel comfortable.
