This is a reminder to please join us tomorrow on Zoom for our monthly meeting.
Water Is the Focus of the April 13 LWVCNM Meeting Noon - 1pm Zoom ONLY. The Zoom invitation follows the description.
How’s this for a dramatic statement? “NEW MEXICO IS THE DRIEST IT HAS BEEN IN OVER 1,000 YEARS.” This assessment comes from the 2022 report of the New Mexico Water Policy and Infrastructure Task Force, which was formed by the State Engineer to make recommendations to implement the New Mexico 50-year Water Plan. The diverse group of Task Force members reached broad consensus on an integrated approach to water governance and presented their recommendations to the 2023 Legislature. (Download the Task Force report https://nmwater.org/files/new-mexico-water-policy-and-infrastructure-task-force-final-report-2022.pdf and the executive summary https://uttoncenter.unm.edu/resources/state-water-task-force/executive-summary.pdf) The legislature passed path-breaking legislation that begins to create a regional approach to water conservation and distribution.
One of the Task Force experts is Norman Gaume, our speaker at our monthly luncheon meeting. He will talk about the water resource challenges we must face to meet growing water demands with overused and declining water supplies. He will encourage the engagement of the LWV in New Mexico water governance reform, including implementation of the water task force recommendations.
Gaume currently serves as president of the Middle Rio Grande Water Advocates. The Water Advocates drafted and was the principal proponent of Senate Bill 337 Water Security Planning Act, which passed unanimously and awaits the Governor’s signature.
Gaume is a retired New Mexico water engineer, manager, and planner. He was Albuquerque’s Water Resources Manager from 1990-97 when Albuquerque’s aquifer use was determined to be unsustainable, and the San Juan-Chama water project was planned. He was the Director of the New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission and the engineering advisor to New Mexico’s Rio Grande Compact Commissioner 1997-2002. Mr. Gaume received the New Mexico Foundation for Open Government Dixon Award in 2016 for his work to protect the wild Gila River.
