Hello League of Women Voters of New Mexico!
My name is Adam Hicks. I am the founder and host of Community Documentary Night<https://documentarynight.wordpress.com/>, based out of Atlanta, Georgia. The purpose of our events is to give people the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions on a wide range of topics with people from various backgrounds. I'm reaching out to you to see if you and your community would be interested in attending our free Virtual Documentary Night in honor of Black History Month on Sunday, February 26th. The event is from 7 pm to 9 pm Eastern Standard Time, but you don't have to stay the entire time. It is very flexible so people can come late or leave early if needed. This event is in collaboration with the National Council of Elders<https://nationalcouncilofelders.org/>, the Cooper Union Black Student Union<https://www.instagram.com/cooperunion.bsu/> (BSU), and the Association of Black Public Health Students<https://www.instagram.com/emory_abphs/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y%3D> (ABPHS). In 2011, Vincent Harding<https://nationalcouncilofelders.org/team/vincent-g-harding/>, James Lawson<https://nationalcouncilofelders.org/team/james-lawson-jr/>, Phil Lawson<https://nationalcouncilofelders.org/team/philip-lawson/>, Dolores Huerta<https://nationalcouncilofelders.org/team/dolores-huerta/>, and Grace Lee Boggs<https://nationalcouncilofelders.org/team/grace-lee-boggs/> founded the National Council of Elders to engage leaders of 20th-century civil rights movements to share what they have learned with young leaders of the 21st century and to promote the theory and practice of nonviolence. The mission of BSU is to create a community for black students at Cooper Union. They aim to create a community that feels welcoming and safe for black students to create, share, and learn from each other. ABPHS is a graduate student organization at Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health. They are dedicated to raising consciousness of health issues in Black communities and enhancing the student experience.
We are meeting to talk about the documentary, Freedom Summer. This film looks at the summer of 1964, when more than 700 student volunteers from around the country joined organizers and local African Americans in a historic effort to shatter the foundations of white supremacy in Mississippi. You can watch it for free at this link. https://www.pbs.org/video/american-experience-freedom-summer/ Dr. Gwendolyn Zoharah Simmons, Larry Rubin, Karin Kunstler, Dr. Anthony J. Harris, and Bruce Watson, who are in the film, will be joining us for a special guest Q&A!

PLEASE WATCH THE FILM ON YOUR OWN PRIOR TO THE EVENT!
The way this works is that everyone watches the film on their own BEFORE the event, then we meet on zoom to discuss. We break everyone out into randomized small groups of around 4 or 5 people, give them a discussion prompt, and give them about 20 minutes or so to discuss in their randomized groups. We will do multiple rounds of small group discussion with different groups and different prompts. This gives everyone an opportunity to meet new people and hear a variety of voices and perspectives throughout the night. Finally, we will end the night with the special guest Q&A!.
Again, the event is very flexible, so feel free to drop in late or leave early if that is what works best with your schedule. The zoom info will be available once you RSVP on the Eventbrite page. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/virtual-documentary-night-tickets-532668464717 We have a wide range of people in attendance ranging in ages from 18 all the way up to 90s. We are also reaching out to relevant non profit, student, academic, community and religious organizations from around the country. I think you all would bring a lot to the discussion. I have attached the event poster to this email, which has a link to the Eventbrite page, where you can RSVP. The film poster is also hyperlinked so that if they click on it they will go straight to the film. Please feel free to share with anyone else you think would be interested. Let me know if you need any more information.
Have a wonderful week!
