Happy New Year LWVCNM Members!  

Our first 2023 monthly meeting will be Thursday January 12th at noon.  This meeting will be Zoom only.  Were you aware that, with permission, we record these zoom meetings and make them available from our website lwvcnm.org?  The Zoom invitation follows the meeting description.

This month Hear About League Priorities for the 2023 New Mexico Legislative Session. 

Please join us on January 12 at noon on Zoom to hear Dick Mason discuss the League of Women Voters of New Mexico priorities for the next session of the New Mexico legislature. The 60-day long session of the legislature begins January 17. This is an open session and lawmakers can raise any issue they like for discussion. 

Dick Mason is a member of LWVCNM, and also the chair of the Action Commission and chief lobbyist for the LWVNM. He guides our advocacy activities in the legislature.

This year the legislative Taxation and Revenue Committee has spent days discussing changes to the tax code. The general goal of the committee seems to be to try to stabilize the New Mexico tax base so that it is less susceptible to the booms and busts of the oil economy. The league has always supported an equitable menu of taxes that are as fair as possible to all members of society, and the action committee will be looking closely at the specific tax bills introduced. If you are interested in following the league priorities closely or in joining the Action Committee, please let Dick know. 

There are likely to be many other items of interest to league members this year, including proposed changes in the election code. Dick is very knowledgeable about how the legislature works and will be happy to answer questions.
