These days, all elections are important! That includes school board elections. In November, voters will face the recently adopted format of all local nonpartisan elections consolidated on one ballot. For Albuquerque voters, several school board seats will be on that ballot.

Our speakers for the September 11 meeting will be two members of the Albuquerque Public Schools board of education who will enlighten us about the issues facing voters in the upcoming school board election. These two members are not running this November.

Barbara Petersen represents District 4. She is approaching the end of her term and is not running for another term. Ms. Petersen was a teacher in Albuquerque Public Schools for more than 30 years and is mother to one daughter who graduated from district schools. She has also served as the political outreach coordinator of the Albuquerque Teachers Federation. She holds a BS and MA in Elementary Education from the University of New Mexico and is a Master Board Member of the New Mexico School Boards Association

Josefina E. Domínguez represents APS District 6, serving her first term on the school board, with her term expiring in 2025. Before retiring in 2013, she spent 28 years as a classroom English and Spanish middle school/high school teacher in seven districts, spanning Colorado, Texas and New Mexico, with the majority of those years in APS. She holds a Master's in literature, New Mexico State University, 2009; Spanish certification, University of Texas Austin, 1984/85 and Colorado College, 1982/83; B.A. in English, Colorado College, 1981.
