The “Likeness of Us” Art Exhibit Opens March 9
Collaboration between detention center girls and professional women artists
Bernalillo County – Bernalillo County Cultural Services and Bernalillo County Youth Services Center present, “The Likeness of Us,” an exhibit of artwork featuring professional women artists and young women from the Youth Services Center (detention facility.) The exhibit will run March 9 - 26 in conjunction with National Women’s History Month, known locally as Women and Creativity Month. The exhibit is located at the African American Performing Arts Center, 310 San Pedro NE on Expo New Mexico.

“The Likeness of Us is a cross-generational visual dialogue between women and girls using art as the medium,” says Debbie Jo Almager, director of Parks and Recreation for Bernalillo County. “The artwork is woven together in a meaningful way to create a tapestry of self-reflection, guidance, and creativity.”

Curated by Bernalillo County Public Art Program manager, Nan Masland, artists Ophelia Cornet and vashti b moss the exhibit is designed as a collaborative project with a chorus of 20 women artists who share their wisdom with girls in the juvenile detention center. Muralist Nani Chacon painted an overall design spanning 162 feet comprised of 18 panels. Responding to the prompt “What advice would you give your teenage self?”

Twenty artists visually depicted their guidance for teen girls on half of the two-foot square panel. In response, the young women at the Youth Services Center then completed each panel during an artist-led workshop and offered advice to their future self.

An opening reception will be held Friday, March 11 from 5:30 – 7 p.m., featuring the exhibiting artists, refreshments, and musical guest “Floozy.”

The exhibit can be viewed March 9 – 26 at the African American Performing Arts Center, located on Expo New Mexico at 310 San Pedro Dr. NE, Albuquerque, 87108. The exhibit will be open Tuesday – Friday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Admission is free.
