BernCo Celebrates National Mental Health Awareness Month
County highlights its transitional housing program Bernalillo County –Nearly 44 million American adults, and millions of children, experience mental health conditions each year, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and post-traumatic stress. Since 1949, May has been recognized as National Mental Health Awareness Month. The Bernalillo County Behavioral Health Initiative, a collaboration of Bernalillo County, the City of Albuquerque, University Hospital and other organizations, represents a significant step forward in local efforts toward addressing and preventing the mental health, substance abuse, addiction, and homelessness crisis in the Albuquerque/Bernalillo County and the middle Rio Grande region of New Mexico. During National Mental Health Awareness Month, Bernalillo County will highlight some of its existing programs that focus on particular areas of behavioral health care. Post-treatment housing: The Supportive Aftercare Community program The county’s Supportive Aftercare Community program is a 70 bed facility housed on the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Assessment and Treatment campus and is operated by the Bernalillo County Department of Substance Abuse Programs. The Supportive Aftercare Community program is designed to allow clients in substance abuse recovery an opportunity to remain in a supportive environment after completing alcohol and drug detoxification and/or rehabilitative services. This transitional living program gives the clients a place to live, rent free, while dealing with finding a job, mending family relationships, resolving legal and other issues that are still a part of life after alcohol and drug detoxification and/or rehabilitative services are completed. Clients can be referred by Turquoise Lodge, University Hospital, other Bernalillo County Department of Substance Abuse Programs, or other referral agencies. The normal stay at the facility, depending on the needs of the client, can vary from six weeks to six months. The Supportive Aftercare Community program is funded under contracts with Optum Healthcare and University Hospital. No funds come from the Bernalillo County general fund. Any New Mexico resident, age 18 or over, who has had an inability to maintain post-treatment recovery in their respective community and who is in need of continued supportive care can apply. Program admission requires proof of tuberculosis clearance. Program participation in the SAC program is voluntary and is provided at no cost to qualifying New Mexico residents seeking a supportive recovery environment after completing alcohol and drug detoxification and/or rehabilitative services. This place has helped me take a look at who I was and who I want to be. With the help of the program, I’ve been able to do the work needed to change,”says Dominic B. a former client. Zack P. says,“I have had the time to look at myself and the opportunity to change some of the mistakes I made. There’s been a lot of support from staff and others in the community. I look forward to my future and being a better person for my family.” # # # About Bernalillo County
