Yes, Jana, trees that will do best going forward are xeric trees from the Water Utility list http://www.abcwua.org/uploads/files/Rebates/xeriplantlist_08032017.pdf
Also, the trees that thrive for us are the ones that receive water from the roof or uphill areas of the lot.
Thanks for the useful dialogue, Gary

ABCWUA website provides lists of water-wise plants and also offers rebates for trees planted from the list.
Those of us from the east where average annual rainfall is 50”+ must learn that Abq’s average annual rainfall is only 9”. This lack of rainwater in combination with extremely low humidity, harsh winds, and excessive UV radiation, behooves is to rely primarily on native plants or be prepared to treat existing non-native plantings with much care.

We’re doing our best. Drought tolerant best. Also need to be mindful of water use.

Thank you for the great point, Bob. Many trees will die if not watered in
weather like we are having.
For more info on watering trees I would draw the attention of neighbors to
page 17 of the Nob Hill Neighborhood Association Spring Newsletter at
http://www.nobhill-nm.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Spring2018-Final.pdf
For info on recommended new trees see page 13.
¡Let's protect our trees! Gary

As I drive around I notice a lot of stress on our old tall pine trees, many
are dying from lack of water it seems. Lots of brown pine needles.
This is going to greatly change the appearance of our community in a few
years, and make us hotter. We need some strategy for the coming climate
change.
Maybe the neighborhood can alert tree owners to step up watering and plant
new ones to replace the dying ones. Maybe there are some more tolerant of
drought?
Bob
