*Fraud Protection Tips for Neighborhood Associations*
<https://cabq.us20.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b697b563bdb0acc3e117a1409&id=e11d2272ba&e=86a7228d94>
The
Office of Neighborhood Coordination (ONC) was recently alerted by one of
our Neighborhood Associations of an attempted scam, in which board member
e-mail addresses were being used to fraudulently request money be
transferred by other board members. Please be very cautious when receiving
e-mail requests for any type of money transfer. If you find that the e-mail
request is a hoax, report it immediately to the Albuquerque Police
Department.

Below are some tips for protecting your information, both in person and
online:

   - Remember that you control the conversation. If you are contacted by
someone asking for money, ask questions and get as much information as you
   can.
   - Trust your instinct. If something feels “not right,” it is worth more
   investigation.
   - Consider updating your association bylaws to include a secure process
by which your association board handles financial transactions.
   - Make sure the association treasurer knows which vendors you are
working with and what money should be owed ahead of time.
   - Be careful what you put on your website or social media. Scammers
troll these sites to find facts about you or your association to build a
   false sense of trust.
   - Always verify the information by initiating contact with a board
member requesting money. For example: if your association treasurer
receives an e-mail from the president asking to have money sent or
transferred, get on the phone and verify with the president before you make
   that transaction.
   - Do not wire-transfer money for any reason.
   - Never provide personal information unless you initiated the contact.
   - Hang up the phone if you have any concerns, if you're threatened, or
if the caller refuses to give you a call-back number. Don't be afraid to be
rude. Scammers often prey on trusting, polite people.
   - If you are surprised by a bill, don’t pay it without first verifying
   its authenticity.
   - If you receive a request for money that is needed by 5:00 "or else",
that's a clue that something might not be right.
   - A legitimate business will always accept multiple forms of payment. If
you’re asked to pay a bill with a pre-paid gift card, watch out! It’s a
   scam.
   - The ONC offers suggestions for protecting your association finances
